For the first time, the list will be voted for by you! Check out each of the stories and vote for your favorite three in the poll on the sidebar. Then, tune in New Year's Eve on 104.7 King FM to find out what order your votes helped them land in:
Country Music
Brooks and Dunn Call It Quits - After a long career, Brooks and Dunn called their music career as a tandem quits. They completed their tour over the summer wrapping it up in Nashville in early September.
Garth Brooks Returns - He's the hottest-selling artist in country music history and he returned to the stage after a long hiatus by having a permanent spot in Las Vegas. Could this be a sign of some new music to come?
Nashville Floods - Country music came together after tragic floods struck Nashville over the summer. Many country music stars hosted benefit concerts and helped each other out...some lost their entire studios in the tragedy.
Local News
Alexis R. McClain Death - Unfortunate deaths are tragic. When a death is ruled intentional, that makes major news. Such was the case when the father and stepmother of Alexis R. McClain were accused of her accidental death on July 10. While the trial is ongoing, this was one of the biggest stories of 2010 locally.
Alward Escapes SCF - Not many people knew the name Douglas J. Alward before August 23 when he became the first inmate to successfully escape from Sterling Correctional Facility since it was built in 1999. After an exhaustive search, he was eventually apprehended near Yuma two days later.
Election 2010 - Nationally, the consensus was "Don't let the door hit you on the way out." Cory Gardner's election to the US House was local indication of that. The governor's office stayed Democratic but the Republican Party faced stiff unheaval over Dan Maes. Locally, however, status quo maintained as virtually all local ballots were party-line Republican.
Walsh Generosity - With the opening of the David Walsh Cancer Center and construction on Blue Spruce Hall at NJC, the Walsh's generosity to Northeast Colorado continued to be the shining beacon of Northeast Colorado. Frank and Gloria have given so much and deserve such credit for the stewardship and charity that has made Northeast Colorado so great.
Sports
Bye Bye McDaniels - The real story is the inability to manage by a young coach. While it was epitomized in the Kyle Orton vs. Tim Tebow discussion among many fans, Denver became the latest team to suffer from buying into hiring of a New England Patriots assistant. Case and point: Spygate II.
Local Sports Success - Northeast Colorado always features stellar sports teams. In 2010, Northeast Colorado teams played for1 state championships, brought home 4 of those gold balls, saw 6 wrestlers take home top honors, and sent more than 80 athletes to the state track and field championships. Add in NJC and Northeast Colorado is the home of kings!
Rapids Win MLS Cup - The state of Colorado hadn't brought home a major professional sports title since 2001 when the Avalanche did it. It wasn't the Broncos, Rockies, Nuggets or Avalanche to do it - it was the Rapids when they beat FC Dallas 2-1 in OT.
