A pair of marijuana growers in Western Canada appear to have been using bears to protect their illegal crop, but the well-fed animals proved to be a bit lax in their guard duties, police said on Wednesday.

An Aug. 18 grass fire in northern Potter left up to 100 acres of land scorched and caused some structural damages, but did not cause any injuries, officials said.

The blaze’s spread was aided by gusty winds and dry Panhandle conditions brought on by recent 100-degree temperatures, but the cause is still unknown.

It took two fire departments, 27 firefighters and more than 15,000 gallons of water to get the grass fire under control. While Potter and Sidney firefighters worked to douse the flames, residents did what they could to save their yards, homes and trees.

In its very first year of existence, Morgan County`s Crop Production Services was honored with one of the top industry standards as a Regional Environmental Respect Award winner for 2010.

This award, which was started by the DuPont corporation in 1990, is about rewarding people who take care of the environment and making chemical and fertilizer applications without accidents, either from spills or people coming into contact with the applications.

Fort Morgan`s branch of CPS was chosen as one of only five farm supply retailers in the nation that won regional awards.

On Aug. 18, at about 5:35 p.m., the Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a 31-year-old male with a gunshot wound. The incident occurred on Highway 63, approximately 1 mile south of Interstate 76.

The unidentified gunshot wound victim was taken to Sterling Regional MedCenter and later transported to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley for further treatment. Current condition on the man is not known.
