Denver came in at #8 on the list of top cities to find a babysitter according to a recent study conducted by Sittercity.com, the nation’s leading website for connecting families with local, quality child care providers.

Sittercity used information including job postings on the site, average hourly cost of a sitter and the number of sitters available in each market to compile the list. The top 10 best cities to find a babysitter were: Virginia Beach, Virginia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Naperville, Illinois; Austin Texas; Portland, Oregon; Dallas, Texas; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Denver, Colorado; Houston, Texas; and Atlanta, Georgia.

Sittercity reviewed over 40 criteria on each caregiver for the poll including background checks, parent reviews, experience and safety skills.

Efforts to increase seat belt usage and promote safe driving techniques are paying off for the state of Nebraska, which continued to see low fatality statistics in 2009. The Nebraska Department of Roads highway safety office recently released its 2009 findings that detail a significant decrease in the state’s death per 100 million vehicle miles rate since 1961.

“In 2009, the death rate on Nebraska roadways was 1.2 persons killed per 100 million vehicle miles traveled,” the report states. “Even though the death rate fluctuates from year to year, there has been a general downward trend.”

In 1964, the death rate reached an apex of 5.7 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles. In 2009, that rate had dropped to 1.2 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles, representing a slight increase of 17 deaths over the previous year.

The highway safety office attributes the death rate decline to various factors, including vehicle design, better roadway engineering, emergency medical services, specific safety programs, enforcement and improved driver awareness.

Sterling’s Memory Walk was held on Saturday.  According to organizer Georgia Kelsch, this year's event has raised nearly $38,000, just shy of this year’s goal of $40,000.

The deadline to turn in funds is in two weeks, and she said there is still money coming in, so that goal looks very achievable. A final tally on the fundraiser should be available by Oct. 1, Kelsch said.

This year’s event drew 200 walkers on 19 teams, plus some additional volunteers.
