Skills USA/VICA Club members that will be auctioned off during the NJC
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Spring has sprung and if you have a major warm weather project coming up, now's a great opportunity to purchase a student to help you get the work done. The Skills USA/VICA secondary automotive program at Northeastern Junior College is having a fundraiser this Friday night to raise money to help cover the costs of the two race cars the students operate and run on area tracks through the spring and summer. The pancake dinner is a kick-off to the NJC Auto Show which takes place this weekend on Saturday and Sunday, sponsored by the NJC Auto Techs Club.

The evening will include an all-you-can-eat pancake dinner from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. held at the automotive training center on the college's north campus, just off Pioneer Road. Students will be flipping and serving cakes for $5 per person, $3 for children under 10. Time will be set aside during the dinner to auction off 11 members. Once purchased, the students will put in an honest day's work.

The Skills USA Club owns two cars that it will be hauling to area tracks this spring and summer to compete in various classes of racing. The cars are tuned up and maintained every year by the students and they actually compete academically for the privilege of driving time. In addition, students have their own car projects that they are also working on during the school year.

The secondary automotive program is a partnership between NJC and area school districts which allows high school students to spend a portion of their school day getting this specialized training.
