The Northeastern Junior College Students
in Free Enterprise Team was named a regional champion at the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) USA Regional Competition held April 7, 2010 in San Francisco, CA. The event is one of 12 SIFE USA Regional Competitions to be held across the United States in March and April.

Northeastern Junior College (NJC) is one of more than 500 SIFE programs in the United States. Participating students use business concepts to develop community outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need.

During this academic year, the NJC SIFE team organized sixteen projects in the Sterling community, including working with Logan County Social Services to help some of their clients be more marketable in their employment search, creating a world tour experience for K-6th grade students at Fleming and Peetz schools, organizing a restaurant showcase featuring area restaurants to new college students, and implementing a campus wide recycling effort at NJC.

"I really enjoyed working with the individuals at social services and assisting them in their employment search," says Maddie Starkebaum, a freshman SIFE Team member from Holyoke. "SIFE has given me the opportunity to make a difference in the community. I am excited to continue to work on these community service projects next year,"

The culmination of the SIFE program is an annual series of competitions that provide a forum for teams to present the results of their projects, and to be evaluated by business leaders serving as judges. Teams compete first at the regional and national levels, then at the international level when the national champion teams from each country meet at the SIFE World Cup.

As a SIFE USA Regional Champion, the Northeastern Junior College SIFE team now advances to the 2010 SIFE USA National Exposition in Minneapolis, Minnesota, May 11-13.

SIFE is an international non-profit organization that brings together the top leaders of today and tomorrow to create a better, more sustainable world through the positive power of business.
