Brad Hawpe, a charter member of the Rockies' Gen R movement and one of the team's most accomplished sluggers, cleared waivers and can now be traded to any team.

The next move is up to the Rockies. If they can find the right deal, they can move him. They can release him and eat the $500,000 buyout in his contract for next season, or they can continue to keep him on the team.

At the moment, Colorado has only 11 active pitchers, and is one extra-inning or high-scoring game away from exhausting their staff, so the club would like to add another arm, and Hawpe could be the odd man out.

Hawpe is expected to attract interest from the Texas Rangers, who employ former Rockies manager Clint Hurdle as their hitting instructor. Multiple teams inquired on Hawpe over the past few days, and potential fits include the White Sox and Red Sox.

Rookie Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow’s first foray into an NFL end zone appears to have left him with injured ribs.

Denver’s rookie quarterback missed his first practice of training camp on Wednesday after jogging off the field during warmups. While the Broncos aren’t saying what’s wrong with their first-round draft pick from Florida, Tebow might be feeling the effects of his game-ending 7-yard touchdown run in his pro debut Sunday night.

Wearing flak jacket-like extra passing around his ribs this week, Tebow participated in both workouts Tuesday when the Broncos reconvened at Dove Valley but he skipped the post-practice wind sprints, where he routinely whoops his offensive teammates.

About 10 minutes into warmups on Wednesday, Tebow huddled with head athletic trainer Steve Antonopulos and appeared to be favoring his left rib cage or abdomen as he jogged off the field and into the team’s headquarters.

Anthony has been linked with the New York Knicks in recent days with reports indicating he will not sign an extension with the Nuggets. Anthony’s contract with the Nuggets runs through the 2010-11 season and he is not expected to exercise his player option for 2011-12.

The Nuggets are still without a general manager, although David Griffin, a former Suns executive, is believed to be the frontrunner according to multiple reports. Griffin reportedly interviewed with the Nuggets last week.

Fresno State and Nevada are leaving the Western Athletic Conference for the Mountain West.

The schools ended a wild Wednesday by announcing they are accepting invitations to join the Mountain West, which has added three prominent members of WAC in the last two months.

Boise State is already bound for the MWC next year and now the Bulldogs and Wolf Pack are following as well, leaving the WAC's future in question and the Mountain West preparing for life after Utah and possibly BYU.

The Cougars are mulling going independent in football and reportedly joining the WAC in all other sports.
