The Denver Nuggets and LA Clippers squared off last night in what was a close game until the end.

Carmelo Anthony scored scored 31 points and Chauncey Billups notched 25 but the Nuggets scored just 15 points in the final quarter to fall 106-93.

Foul trouble plagued the Nuggets, however, as Al Harringtn played less than 18 minutes in the game and score just 3 points due to foul trouble.

Alec Burks and the CU Buff Men's Basketball team started slow but finished strong beating Western New Mexico 92-70 last night.

Alec Burks scored 20 points and Cory Higgins had 18 both responding well after Western New Mexico took an 8-2 lead, prompting Colorado coach Tad Boyle to pull his starters just 2:01 into the game.

After the starters returned, five straight layups by the Buffaloes (11-4) sparked a 17-2 run that gave them a 30-24 lead with 6:23 left in the first half.

Michael Lyons took an outlet pass from Evan Washington, slammed it home, was fouled and made the free throw with 1:47 remaining to give Air Force the lead for good in a 77-69 victory over Utah in a Mountain West Conference opener Wednesday night.

Lyons scored a career-high 26 points and brought the Clune Arena crowd to its feet with the emphatic dunk while being fouled by the Utes’ Will Clyburn. After a steal at the other end of the court, Derek Brooks connected on a 3-pointer to put the Falcons (10-4) up 72-67.

Air Force hit five free throws in the final 33 seconds to seal the victory.

In Mountain West Women's Basketball action last night:

  • The Air Force Falcon women lost to Utah 77-40.  Air Force shot less than 27% and turned the ball over 27 times.  Alicia Lippreant led the way with 14 points.
  • The Wyoming Cowgirls took the first women's game in the Border War 83-43 last night.  Jade Kennedy's triple-double (17 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists) and 53% team shooting led to the easy victory.

University of Denver women's basketball junior Kaetlyn Murdoch (Temple, Texas) scored two of her game-high 22 points with just 12 seconds left to give the Pioneers a dramatic 51-50 victory over Western Kentucky at E.A. Diddle Arena on Wednesday night.

The Pioneers (9-6, 1-1 SBC) trailed by 10 points with 5:03 remaining, but Denver clawed back and ended the game on an 8-0 run for its first ever win against the Lady Toppers (5-8, 2-0 SBC) in Bowling Green.

Senior Brianna Culberson (Jefferson City, Mo.) added 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Hall of Famer John Elway is embarking on another comeback.

The beloved quarterback who led the Broncos to five Super Bowl appearances and back-to-back championships before retiring in 1999 returned to the team’s Dove Valley headquarters Wednesday to begin restoring the franchise’s tarnished image and bringing back its winning ways.

Team owner Pat Bowlen said he expects his new chief football executive to lead the Broncos to more Super Bowls.

One of the greatest players in the early history of the Rockies, outfielder Larry Walker made a strong showing in his first time on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot on Wednesday.

Walker, who earned the 1997 National League Most Valuable Player Award and won three NL batting titles while representing the Rockies from 1995-2004, received 118 votes of the record 581 ballots cast by eligible voting members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America, for 20.3 percent of the vote.

A candidate must receive 75 percent of the vote to gain election.
