ABOUT THE AUTHOR

NEW ORLEANS – Her NCAA track career might be finished, but the awards keep coming for University of Colorado senior Jenny Barringer as she has been named the USTFCCCA Female Track Athlete of the Year, announced on Tuesday.

Barringer continued her outdoor season where she finished her indoor season---breaking record after record after record. She debuted at the Oregon Relays on April 24 and raced to a then-school record of 4:08.38 in the 1,500-meter run which, at the time, was the fastest in the country. The following night Barringer raced to a mark of 2:05.43 in the 800 and was just shy of setting the school record. The time was the second fastest time run by a Buff in 29 years.

During Barringer’s 5k race at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., she took off from the gun and raced to a time of 15:07.64 to win and take the NCAA record. Barringer’s mark is the best in the U.S. and ranks seventh in the world this season. It is also a qualifying time for the IAAF World Championship in Germany.

At the Big 12 Outdoor Championship, Barringer debuted in her specialty event, the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She had not competed in the event since the finals of the Beijing Olympics in August. Barringer did not set a record, but she finished in 9:58.14 and was over 30 seconds faster than the runner-up to win an individual title.

The Oviedo, Fla. native won her fourth regional title on May 30 in the steeplechase and capped off her collegiate steeplechase career by winning her third NCAA title in the event in a NCAA meet and collegiate record time of 9:25.54 which is the fastest in the world this year. Barringer became the first CU female athlete to win four NCAA titles (three in the steeplechase and one in the indoor 3k) as well as the first female to win three titles in the same event.

Barringer shined for a national audience on NBC when she took second in the 1,500 at the prestigious Prefontaine Classic on June 7. Barringer ran in a star-studded field and took second place in a collegiate and school record 3:59.90. She was second to the meet record holder, Gelete Burka, by just .01 seconds as Barringer almost out-sprinted her to the finish in the final 100 meters. Barringer is the youngest American to ever run under four minutes and is the first to do so in seven years. The time is the fastest by an American this season and is the third fastest in the world during the 2009 season.

Over the course of this season, indoors and out, Barringer has been named the Big 12 Indoor Performer of the Year, USTFCCCA Indoor/Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, CU Athlete of the Year and most recently a final five honoree for the 2009 Honda-Broderick Cup after winning the Honda Sports Award for track and field.

Barringer is a political science and economics major at CU and will graduate in December this year. The eight-time member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s honor roll owns a 3.564 grade point average and has been a member of the Dean’s List four times. She was named the USTFCCCA All-Academic Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year in 2006 and 07 as well as a CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2008 and all-district in 2009. Barringer is a three-time member of the Big 12 All-Academic First team.
