Wyoming QB Austyn Carta-Samuels earned MWC player of the week honors.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) -True freshman Austyn Carta-Samuels went 24-of-37 and threw three touchdown passes in his first career start as Wyoming beat UNLV 30-27 in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams.

Carta-Samuels led the Cowboys (2-2, 1-0 Mountain West) on two key scoring drives in the fourth quarter, and sophomore cornerback Tashaun Gipson picked off Rebel quarterback Omar Clayton twice in the second half to lead the Wyoming defense.

UNLV (2-2, 0-1) had a chance to tie the game with a field goal with 1:19 remaining, but fumbled the snap and Wyoming's Corey Orth recovered the ball at the Cowboys' 38-yard line.

Gabe Knapton contributed a team-high 17 tackles for the Wyoming defense.

Clayton went 26-of-43 for the Rebels, who dropped their 20th straight conference road game. Starr Fuimaono led the UNLV defense with 11 tackles.

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP) - Reggie Rembert returned a fumble 47 yards for a score, the first of Air Force's two defensive touchdowns, and Erik Soderberg tied a school record with four field goals, lifting the Falcons to a 26-14 win over San Diego State on Saturday.

The Falcons (3-1, 2-0 Mountain West) have won three straight over the Aztecs (1-3, 0-1).

The opportunistic Air Force defense recovered two fumbles and picked off four passes, including a 47-yard interception return for a score by Anthony Wright in the third quarter.

Rembert had a day to remember, intercepting two passes, forcing a fumble and scooping up Aztecs quarterback Ryan Lindley's fumble and outracing everyone to the end zone early in the game.

This was the second game back for Rembert, who missed the first two following a suspension for an unspecified violation of Academy standards.

Both of Rembert's interceptions were of the spectacular variety. The junior defensive back had a diving interception to thwart a San Diego State drive late in the second quarter.

Rembert had another later in the game when the ball deflected off the hands and then the heel of receiver DeMarco Sampson and straight into Rembert's arms, who made sure he got a foot down before falling out of bounds.

Rembert also forced a fumble and helped keep standout receiver Vincent Brown bottled up - until the fourth quarter, that is. Brown finished with 10 catches for 123 yards, most coming late in the game.

PROVO, Utah (AP) Harvey Unga ran for 113 yards and three touchdowns and No. 19 BYU converted two interceptions and a blocked punt into scores while holding off Colorado State 42-23 Saturday.

Max Hall passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Cougars (3-1) won the Mountain West Conference opener one week after getting blown out at home by Florida State.

The Cougars still had some defensive lapses in the second half, but built a 21-0 lead off Colorado State's mistakes in the first quarter.

Hall was 18 for 29 for 241 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Grant Stucker completed 30 of 50 passes for 372 yards and two touchdowns for the Rams (3-1, 0-1), whose six-game winning streak ended.

Colorado State got within 28-17 on a field goal early in the fourth quarter and answered Unga's third TD run with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Strucker to Tyson Liggett to make it 35-23 after the two-point conversion failed. But the Rams could not keep matching BYU to overcome the deficit.

GREELEY, Colo. - For the third time in four games this season, junior cornerback Korey Askew notched a career-high in tackles but it was not enough as the Northern Colorado football team dropped a 25-7 decision to Montana State at Nottingham Field on Saturday afternoon.
