ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Each week, the sports crew at King FM and KSTC shuffles through the stack of stats we get form all our area schools high schools and NJC sports programs and find the best performances of the week. Then, you get to vote for the performance you think should be dubbed “King of the Week” presented by Ertle Brothers Discount Auto. Then, each Saturday morning we announce the player you voted as simply the best!

Here’s the 411 on the rules…

  1. A player can be nominated as many times during a sports season as he/she can. Once players have been nominated for the “King of the Week” honor, your votes and your votes alone in the poll on the right-hand sidebar will choose which one was the best. In the event of a tie, the sports crew reserves the right to break the tie as they see fit.
  2. Please limit yourself to one vote per week. The sports crew should not need to consume their time in eliminating votes due to abuse. If the player you have the intense desire to vote for over and over truly had the best performance of the week, others will vote for that performance. (Note: Nowhere in the rules does it state you cannot encourage others to vote for a given performance). Please have respect for those who follow the rules and those who put on this process. Please do not require drastic changes to be made to this process.
  3. Once a player has been named “King of the Week” they do not become eligible to be nominated for “King of the Week” again until the postseason of their current sports season or the next sports season (whichever occurs first).
  4. And finally, I didn't think I needed to put this out there but apparently I do. King of the Week voting is for entertainment purposes only! This is not a prize-winning contest with trophies, plaques, scholarships, or anything else. This is merely internet public opinion of which performance was better. It bears no weight in any other venue.

Get it? Good. Now take a look at this week’s crop of nominees and vote in the poll on the sidebar for the one you would like chosen as “King of the Week” presented by Ertle Brothers Discount Auto:

Adele Cass (Pawnee) - While the Coyotes didn't get the state championship they wanted, they finished one place higher than last year with a 3rd place finish.  Adele was a big part of that, especially in the 3rd place game against Briggsdale tallying 20 points and corralling 11 boards.

Brandon Baer (Wiggins) - Very few players can say they've hit a half-court shot to end a game.  Even fewer can say they did it in the state tournament with their season on the line.  Brandon did that in the consolation semifinals on Friday to keep Wiggins' season alive for another 24 hours.  Make sure to catch the replay of his shot on the Saturday Morning Sports Show this Saturday at 8am on 104.7 King FM.

Corey Stumpf (Caliche) - "Corey Stumpf is the best player in 1A, period."  Those are the words spoken by his head coach Randy Kirkwood just minutes after the team repeated as state champs.  King FM couldn't agree more.  He was named Most Reliable Player of the 1A Tournament thanks to 17 points in the championship game.

Jenna Vandenbark (Fleming) - With big dropping like flies due to knee injuries, Jenna was the biggest offensive weapon remaining in the consolation championship against Idalia on Saturday.  She made her presence felt scoring 30 points in a near-30-point victory over Idalia.

Kaitlyn Hill (Briggsdale) - While different individuals showed in different games for the Falcons last week, Kaitlyn's heart was evident every game and the reason she was nominated for King of the Week.  The senior was the glue all season in what could have been a tumultous year that ended with a 4th place finish at state.

Kyle Carper (Holyoke) - M-R-P could be chanted at Mr. Carper every time he stepped on the floor.  His reliability shone through in the 2A State Championship game where he shut down Ignacio's powerful inside to garner Holyoke the 2A gold ball.

Lance Pickett (Otis) - In just his second year of playing basketball, "Big" Lance Pickett played the tournament of his life at the 1A Tournament last week.  The big man capped off his basketball career with a career-high 23 points in the championship loss to Otis.

Makenzie Ault (Sedgwick County) - When you're all over the place, good things are going to happen.  Thus was the case for Makenzie Ault and the Sedgwick County Lady Cougars.  While they finished 6th, Makenzie was big with steals and assists in the 3 games the Cougars played at their first state tournament since the co-op.

Samantha Cure (Idalia) - The Wolves' senior's career went out with a wimper (7 points after fouling out early in the 4th) but that's not to discount the HUGE games she had the prior two.  She scored 22 against eventual-state champs Kim on Thursday and 26 against Dove Creek on Friday.  A 55-point tournament isn't too shabby.

Sidney Merrill (Akron) - The lone underclassman of the group is a freshman.  Merrill was big defensively consistently notching the big defensive assignment for the Rams as they came up 2nd in the 2A Tournament.  You can't advance at that level without great defense.

Congratulations to Caliche's Corey Stumpf who narrowly edged Sedgwick County's Makenzie Ault and Fleming's Jenna Vandenbark for the honor this week.
