ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Each week, the sports crew at King FM and KSTC shuffles through the stack of stats we get form all our area schools high schools and NJC sports programs and find the best performances of the week. Then, you get to vote for the performance you think should be dubbed “King of the Week” presented by Ertle Brothers Discount Auto. Then, each Saturday morning we announce the player you voted as simply the best!

Here’s the 411 on the rules…

  1. A player can be nominated as many times during a sports season as he/she can. Once players have been nominated for the “King of the Week” honor, your votes and your votes alone in the poll on the right-hand sidebar will choose which one was the best. In the event of a tie, the sports crew reserves the right to break the tie as they see fit.
  2. Please limit yourself to one vote per week. The sports crew should not need to consume their time in eliminating votes due to abuse. If the player you have the intense desire to vote for over and over truly had the best performance of the week, others will vote for that performance. (Note: Nowhere in the rules does it state you cannot encourage others to vote for a given performance). Please have respect for those who follow the rules and those who put on this process. Please do not require drastic changes to be made to this process.
  3. Once a player has been named “King of the Week” they do not become eligible to be nominated for “King of the Week” again until the postseason of their current sports season or the next sports season (whichever occurs first).
  4. And finally, I didn't think I needed to put this out there but apparently I do. King of the Week voting is for entertainment purposes only! This is not a prize-winning contest with trophies, plaques, scholarships, or anything else. This is merely internet public opinion of which performance was better. It bears no weight in any other venue.

Get it? Good. Now take a look at this week’s crop of nominees and vote in the poll on the sidebar for the one you would like chosen as “King of the Week” presented by Ertle Brothers Discount Auto:

#1 Jarret Cure (Wray) - The Eagles are on a 7-game winning streak and Jarret has been a huge part of that.  He has 23 points and 6 assists in the team's two wins last week, a league win over Wiggins on Friday and a out-of-state victory over Hitchcock County (NE) on Saturday.

#3 Lindsey Stumpf (Caliche) - While the Lady Buffs may have gone 0-2 this weekend, Lindsey's offense was not one of the team's downfalls.  Stumpf scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds against Fleming backing up a 10 point, 7 rebound performance against Akron on Friday.

#3 Xavier Talton (Sterling) - The player that many touted as one of the best in Class 4A coming into the season had his coming out party, of sorts, on Friday against Greeley West.  With his team tight late, Talton dropped buckets to get the league win and stay 11-0.  Xavier finished the game with 15 points and 6 assists.

#10 Mrashi Karumba (NJC) - The sophomore from England showed two different ways of being a star contributor to the Plainswomen this past week.  Shooting 0-for-11 against Eastern Wyoming on Tuesday, she stepped up on the glass and ripped down 14 rebounds.  On Saturday against North Platte, her offense was the star as she scored a team-high 25 points, tying Dawn Wattley's season-high point total.

#12 Widgett Washington (NJC) - Like his Plainswoman counterpart, Widgett showed two ways of contributing this week.  Against Eastern Wyoming on Tuesday, the freshman dished out 6 assists and had 6 steals while putting up 9 points.  Against North Platte on Saturday, Widgett had the biggest offensive outburst of any player for or against NJC this season, dropping 30 on the Knights on 9-for-19 shooting and 11-for-14 free throws.

#15 Carle Walser (Merino) - On a big weekend for the Rams, one of the unexpected stepped up to make her presence felt.  Carle led the offense both nights against Sedgwick County and Akron, putting up a total of 31 points against two LPAA foes.  Her points also helped Merino stay undefeated on the season.

#15 Kegan Carwin (Peetz) - Kegan had his 5th and 6th straight games scoring in double figures last week putting up 14 against both Creek Valley (NE) and Fleming.  His performance against Fleming wasn't just about scoring, though.  He also had 10 rebounds and 4 assists in the league win.

#23 Jenna Vandenbark (Fleming) - The Lady Wildcats bounced back nicely from their first loss of the season last Saturday scoring victories over Peetz and Caliche.  Jenna was outstanding on Friday night putting up a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.  She followed that up with 12 points and 5 rebounds Saturday against Caliche.

#42 Andrew Rebol (Fort Morgan) - The Mustangs scored a big victory over Fossil Ridge on Friday night keeping their hopes for a home-game in the opening round of the conference tournament alive.  Andrew did everything possible in that game scoring a team-high 18 points, pulling down a team-high 8 rebounds, and nabbing a team-high 4 steals.

#54 Kaylee Kuehn (Haxtun) - The Lady Bulldogs didn't get the win against county rivals Holyoke this weekend but Kaylee had her first performance that lived up to the Kuehn-hype.  Kaylee tallied her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds against the Dragons.

Congratulations to Peetz's Kegan Carwin voted this week's King of the Week!  Check back Tuesday for the next round of voting.
