ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Each week, the sports crew at King FM and KSTC shuffles through the stack of stats we get form all our area schools high schools and NJC sports programs and find the best performances of the week. Then, you get to vote for the performance you think should be dubbed “King of the Week” presented by Ertle Brothers Discount Auto. Then, each Saturday morning we announce the player you voted as simply the best!

Here’s the 411 on the rules…

  1. A player can be nominated as many times during a sports season as he/she can. Once players have been nominated for the “King of the Week” honor, your votes and your votes alone in the poll on the right-hand sidebar will choose which one was the best. In the event of a tie, the sports crew reserves the right to break the tie as they see fit.
  2. Please limit yourself to one vote per week. The sports crew should not need to consume their time in eliminating votes due to abuse. If the player you have the intense desire to vote for over and over truly had the best performance of the week, others will vote for that performance. (Note: Nowhere in the rules does it state you cannot encourage others to vote for a given performance). Please have respect for those who follow the rules and those who put on this process. Please do not require drastic changes to be made to this process.
  3. Once a player has been named “King of the Week” they do not become eligible to be nominated for “King of the Week” again until the postseason of their current sports season or the next sports season (whichever occurs first).
  4. And finally, I didn't think I needed to put this out there but apparently I do. King of the Week voting is for entertainment purposes only! This is not a prize-winning contest with trophies, plaques, scholarships, or anything else. This is merely internet public opinion of which performance was better. It bears no weight in any other venue.

Get it? Good. Now take a look at this week’s crop of nominees and vote in the poll on the sidebar for the one you would like chosen as “King of the Week” presented by Ertle Brothers Discount Auto:

Alex Klopp (Yuma) - The Indians are having somewhat of a down year as a team with a lot of youth wrestling varsity.  But Alex has been a significant bright spot for them this season and won the 3A Regional Tournament at 112-pound in Brush this weekend.  He'll go to state with a 35-4 record and a lot of confidence.

Bobby Lebsock (Sterling) - With the Tigers heading into the conference tournament, they were looking for a step-up performance.  They got that out of Lebsock who scored 43 points in 3 games on the week, including 16 against Berthoud on Saturday.

Brennan Hottinger (Akron) - In a very deep weight class at 160 in the Class 2A regional wrestling tournament, Hottinger took it to the field and won the regional championship.  He takes a 26-4 record to state and has momentum beating on of the deepest fields in Class 2A.

Buddy Watson (Wiggins) - Regional wrestling always sees some intense matchups.  At the 130-pound weight class in Class 2A, Buddy has been absolutely dominant this year, and was again on Saturday.  He won the regional and takes his 37-1 record to state this week.

Marissa Smith (Holyoke) - For the second week in a row, the Dragons surprised a dominant team.  This time Marissa's victim was Fleming who her 18 points helped down in OT on Thursday.  She scored 49 points in 3 games of play this week where Holyoke went 3-0 and continued their strong run to postseason.

Ramon Tarin (Wray) - While many of the regional wrestling winners came as no surprise to make experts, Ramon's was one that caught several people off-guard in Holyoke on Saturday.  The 119-pounder sports a 26-16 record on the season but was dominant in claiming the regional crown for the Eagles.

Sabelle Diata (NJC) - I didn't think she could top some of her previous performances but Sabelle did against Lamar last Wednesday.  She went out and threw a triple-double down on the Lopes with 19 points, 20 rebounds and 11 blocks.  She was named NJCAA Player of the Week for that performance, and nearly tore the house down at Hoops Homecoming on Saturday when she attempted a dunk on a fast break.

Widgett Washington (NJC) - The freshman dubbed as "The General" was anything but general in his performance at LCCC last Monday.  He scored 40 points in a 96-84 loss to the Golden Eagles.  Then, he topped the 20-point barrier on Wednesday and Saturday tallying 89 points in 3 games of sub-region play last week.  Quite frankly, he's a "bad, bad man."

Your votes named Sabelle Diata as the first foreign-born King of the Week during the winter season, joining Karen Rivatto as the two foreign-born players to garner your votes during the 2009-2010 season!
