ABOUT THE AUTHOR

As you've grown accustomed to hearing, when postseason hits, it's time for our Reliable All-Tournament teams.

Is there a prize for being on the team? No. Is there a trophy/plaque/scholarship? No. It's just our way of recognizing the best performers in the tournament.

Preparing for this postseason, we realized that our criteria for naming a player to the team has never been publicly defined. So, here's the criteria we use in determining which players are named to the team:

  1. 15 players are named to the team. One is guaranteed from each team in the tournament. In the case of a pigtail game(s) for districts, the player(s) representing the losing team(s) from the pigtail game may be named as "Honorable Mention."
  2. Players are named to the team based solely on their performance in the respective tournament being covered. Regular season, previous season, or any other unrelated stats/stories/honors to the given tournament are not taken into account. The same can be said for whether a player is a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior. If a player performs, they will be recognized.
  3. A player's performance is judged by their overall contribution to their team's success in the tournament. Equal weight is given to every statistic tracked by the broadcast team through a uniquely-deveolped formula. This ensures that an athlete's true contribution is guaged by every aspect of the game, not just the traditional "points scored" formula used by the major media outlets in the state.
  4. Each tournament features a "Most-Reliable Player" named as a part of the team. This player is named as the player deemed to be most-integral to their team's success in the tournament. The player must be on the winning team in the tournament.

That is the criteria, plain and simple. Naming of a player to the team is done by the broadcast crew and its member's alone. No parents, coaches, school officials, or other non-broadcast members are consulted.
